Growing Up Polo
Matthew Levin
Atlanta, GA
"When I was in elementary school, my mother would pick out my shirt for my annual school photo. As the third of three boys, many of my shirts were passed down to me from my older brothers. Without realizing it, my mother chose a bright red Polo shirt each year.”
For the Love of Lo
Jaimie & Anton Lacson
Carson, CA
"My husband and I are fashion lovers. There are certain pieces we’ve acquired through our travels that will stay with us forever, like this limited-edition Polo mash-up patchwork. It represents history. It’s kind of like wearing the greatest hits of that era.”
Polo in the ER
Joanne Crowley, MD
Long Beach, CA
"Given the rigors of my profession, clothes take a beating. Most of us wear scrubs, but I find that I can wear a Ralph Lauren Polo shirt or cashmere sweater and be completely comfortable. Just a little Ralph Lauren makes me feel beautiful and feminine.”
Bridging Cultures
Ascia Al Faraj
Kuwait City, Kuwait
"Growing up straddled between two cultures—Kuwaiti and American—and trying to find common ground was sometimes difficult, but what I found as a unifier was that iconic little Ralph Lauren Pony. Both sides of my family chose to wear it, but what I remember most was the way my father wore it in Kuwait on his crisp white Polo shirt.”
A Polo and a Spray Can
Kel1st & Mare 139
New York, NY
"It turned out to be a classic New York City summer night that I would never forget. Aside from getting some paint on my fingers and dirt on the inside of my Polo shirt (I turned it inside out to paint), I came out of the train station fairly clean and presentable. Reliving this moment makes me wonder, where is that Polo shirt now?”
Better With Age
Elmore (Ali) Richmond III
Brooklyn, NY
"I wanted a Polo shirt so badly, but my Mom said, ‘No, next year. You’re not old enough.’ A year later on the first day of fourth grade I wore a yellow Ralph Lauren Polo shirt. The one I’m holding reminds me of that first one. It’s been around for years, worn, and ripped and mended and splattered, but it represents the promise my mother made and kept.”
Home on the Range
Jane Golliher
Jackson Hole, WY
"My husband and I are blessed to live in a remote part of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Ranching and horses [are] every part of our lives. [For us,] the Polo shirt is such a classic, something that doesn’t change with the fads, that lasts long and fits well … and has, of course, the symbol of man and horse working in harmony.”

“I first discovered Ralph Lauren probably as a kid, just running around in Macy’s with my mother. But my first real memory of Ralph Lauren was going into the shopping area over on Fulton Street and seeing young kids running around with it and bunches just doing it crazy with all types of logos and medallions on the shirts. Crests, things that I never seen before.Polo will always be timeless because Polo’s a part of inner-city New York culture. So, when you see people put it on a certain way, it just has this certain allure to it. It’s almost like the closest thing to a time machine.”

“My relationship with Ralph Lauren is that I am truly addicted to it. I like the diversity above all. From season to season, RL manages to stay relevant rebranding its classics, which are strong, iconic pieces.” —Fresh’Lo
“My first memory of Ralph Lauren is my brothers and sisters wearing Polo shirts. At first, I only bought basics, then I started buying more diverse pieces made for sport, including some from the Stadium collection.” —Hebeb
“In Paris, Ralph Lauren is everywhere. It is really worn by everyone, at any time and in any place. It is a very inclusive brand to which anyone can relate. The brand is worn as much by older people as it is young.” —Anaïs Lawson

“My first memory with Ralph Lauren was when my father would let me wear his favorite Polo shirts. The first Polo item I bought myself was this cobalt-blue Polo Sport tee that had a bunch of tropical fish graphics. I think that was around ’96. I love how the brand doesn’t get swayed by trends. The way I see it, Polo does something, and other brands follow. I think it has a lot of confidence when it comes to design, and I love that. It’s what makes them so timeless. Polo has always been a part of me and my wardrobe. When I want to go back to my roots, I find myself wearing Ralph Lauren.”
