Refresh

Now’s the time to take paintbrush in hand and recharge and refresh the forgotten places and spaces in your home with unexpected jolts of color. Guess what? It will refresh you, too!

Ever take a look in the mirror and feel a bit tired and wan? A quick remedy might be going for a run to spark a healthy glow or adding a spot of unexpected color to what you’re wearing. It’s the same with our homes. Paint is the perfect tonic to liven up the look of kitchen cabinets, storage closets, hallways, or walls that have gotten a little sad and neglected.

If you’re in need of inspiration, just go online. Every paint maker offers color charts galore, and don’t forget all the interior design magazines or idea hubs like Instagram or Pinterest. Just grab your brush and paint gloves, turn up the music, and take a break to refresh not only your home but your spirits as well.

What’s the real “living room” in our homes? The kitchen, of course! And though kitchens are designed to be primarily purposeful, filled with cabinets, shelves, and closets to help us stay organized, who’s to say you can’t give them a romantic lift by brushing on delicate pastels? Be inspired by the soft shades of hydrangeas and delicate roses or the palettes of the French impressionists who kept nature’s hues as their special color charts. And, of course, you can explore online the endless color alchemy created and shared by your favorite contemporary artists, interior designers, and architects. Go ahead, now’s the time to take time out to have a little fun adding color to all the places and rooms we call HOME!

Because your home has become such a personal companion, even in some ways a genuine witness to some pretty remarkable stay-at-home days and ways of living right now, wouldn’t this be a good time to give it some extra painterly love? And what about choosing something as unexpected as the inside of a closet? Whether it’s a clothes closet, a bathroom cabinet, or a storage closet for serving pieces, compotes, wine glasses, or candlestick holders, what a difference color can make as a backdrop for all your personal treasures. Pick a shade that is bright and unexpected, like a mint green, ballerina pink, or even a daffodil yellow. When you open the door—what a surprise! Everything inside will suddenly spring to new life.

Like the famous Mexican architect Luis Barragán, be daring with color! Make the entrance of your home—apartment or house—more inventive and welcoming. Consider adding a bold graphic like the stripes swished on the wall here. Then hang a collection of fun hats or artwork to mix it up even more. Hallways between rooms are often neglected. Liven them up with stripes or any kind of painterly pattern. Even just a surprising color as a backdrop for family photos or children’s artwork can create a unique environment taking you from one room to the next.

Recipes, treats, and rituals

COMFORT FOOD

Blueberry Crisp

Quick, easy, and delicious, this in-season recipe is inspired by blueberry-picking outings with her children when they were young

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups fresh blueberries
2 tablespoons sugar
Zest and juice of 1 lemon
¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1½ cups rolled oats
6 tablespoons (¾ stick) salted butter, softened
Ice cream or whipped cream

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Toss the blueberries, sugar, lemon zest, and juice together in a bowl. Pour into a 9-inch square baking dish.
In the bowl of a food processor, combine the flour, brown sugar, oats, and butter. Pulse the mixture until it resembles crumbs. Spread the mixture over the berries.
Bake until golden on top, 40 to 45 minutes.
Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.

Cold Comfort

As the weather warms up, the desire for a good cup of coffee remains. Here’s how to make the ultimate cold brew at home, courtesy of the experts at Ralph’s Coffee

Ralph’s Cold Brew Coffee

What You’ll Need:

½ cup coarsely ground coffee
2⅓ cups filtered water
2 glass jars with lids
Measuring cup
Spoon
Fine mesh sieve
Filter paper
Ice

INSTRUCTIONS:

Scoop ½ cup of ground coffee into one of the glass jars, then add ¾ cup of water to the jar.
Use the spoon to give the mixture a good stir, then add the remaining water. Stir to combine.
Close the lid of the jar. Steep the cold brew concentrate in the fridge or at room temperature for 12 to 18 hours.
Pour the cold brew coffee through a fine mesh sieve set over the second glass jar. For a better result, line then sieve with filter paper and strain the coffee again to remove all traces of sediment.
To serve, add milk or water at a ratio of 1:1 in a cup filled with ice.
